Creating constructive communication, promoting understanding and collaboration, and guiding parties towards sustainable resolutions are the essential functions of skilled mediators in resolving conflicts amicably and eliminating future disputes.
In order to achieve this, each mediator must possess a unique set of skills, and practicing these skills will not only enhance their effectiveness, but it may also have a profound effect on the final outcome.
We can now hone these specific mediation skills by using Mediation Negotiation Cards.
HOW TO USE MEDIATION NEGOTIATION CARDS:
- Select a Practice situation:
- Mediator dialogue with one Conflicted Party.
- Mediator dialogue with both Conflicted Parties separately.
- Mediator dialogue with both Conflicted Parties at same time.
- Each Conflicted Party is shown their Situational Card with various expected outcomes and background information.
- The Mediator is shown a random Mediation Skill/Tactic Card from the "Mediation Tactics Deck."
- The Practice situation should last between 4 to 8 minutes.
- During the practice the Mediator should try and purposely use their selected tactic.
- Immediately after the practice each party can be asked what skill/tactic they believe the mediator was practicing.
- After a debrief the exercise can be repeated with a different tactic/skill.
