How Negotiation Clubs Work!

"Negotiation clubs provide a structured and interactive environment for individuals to practice and refine their negotiation skills."

The Mechanics of Negotiation Clubs:

1. Regular Practice Sessions

Clubs meet at set intervals (e.g. weekly, fortnightly or monthly), with both online and in-person meetings available.

2. Focused Sessions

Each session lasts between 60 and 90 minutes.

3. Practical Skill

Members participate in hands-on negotiation exercises with real-time feedback.

4. Structured Activities

Using Negotiation Cards to create simple or complex negotiations for individuals or team practice.

  • Single-variable tactics to hone specific skills.
  • Team negotiations with roles like spokesperson, observer, and decision-maker.
  • Complex simulations requiring advanced preparation.
  • Competitions that add an element of challenge and fun.

5. Expert Guidance

Experienced trainers or facilitators guide sessions, providing insights, feedback, and advice on strategies, techniques, and common pitfalls.

6. The Community App

A dedicated community app provides continuous engagement and connection between sessions.

A Typical Negotiation Club Meeting:

1. Welcome and Updates:

A brief welcome sets the tone, sometimes including updates for members to reflect on or consider.

2. Pair Work:
  • Members work in pairs to practice negotiation techniques and tactics.
  • Observation doubles the learning through feedback and reflection.
3. Primary Activities:
  • Negotiation Practice:
    • Participants engage in a purposeful negotiation exercise focusing on a specific tactic or technique.
  • Observation Feedback:
    • Each member takes on the observer role, providing detailed feedback to their partner.
  • Smaller groups work together in one Zoom room or at a single table.
  • Larger groups are divided into groups of four, each working in separate Zoom breakout rooms or at their own table.
  • Progress is assigned through a “Level of Achievement”: Level 1, 2, or 3.
4. Meeting Review & Closing:
  • Each meeting has it's own review with suggestions for improving observation, feedback or structure.
  • The session concludes with a reflection and encouragement to continue practising outside the meeting.

This format ensures every meeting is impactful, supportive and geared toward continuous improvement.
